About Nicollet Mall

The mall runs through downtown with Hennepin Avenue to the west and iconic buildings lining the mall like the IDS Center, Orchestra Hall and the Hennepin County Library. Along with shopping and dining, you can enjoy events like the Holidazzle Parade, the summer farmers’ market, and you’ll be in walking distance to top entertainment attractions.

Nicollet Avenue became a primary shopping street in the 19th century. They had department stores like Powers Dry Goods, Dayton’s and Donaldson’s on the stretch. By the mid-20th century, the city declined while the suburbs grew and at the same time, the Southdale Center opened over in Edina as the first modern enclosed shopping mall.

With efforts to restore downtown, the skyway system was constructed and the Nicollet Mall was formed out of Nicollet Avenue by converting the street into a tree-lined mall and closing it to traffic. This inspired transit malls around the country to form.
