Golf courses around the country are having a hard time turning a profit—a trend two local courses here in the Twin Cities definitely felt last fall. Unfortunately, the Hillcrest Golf Course in suburban Hillcrest and the Mississippi Dunes golf course in Cottage Grove both permanently closed last year, and both are also expected to be re-developed sooner rather than later. 

At the time of the closing, details about what could be built remained unknown, but the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal just recently provided us with an update on what could potentially take over each site. 

In Hillcrest, locals seem to be hoping for commercial development that could in turn be followed by job growth, although it’s possible hundreds of homes could also be built too. 

Over at the Mississippi Dunes course, several developers have reportedly shown interest in the property, which is being listed for $10 million. Encompassing 185 acres, the course also features about 1,900 feet of Mississippi River shoreline, which of course makes it an intriguing option to build more waterfront homes in Cottage Grove. 

Of course nothing has yet been made official, but it’s starting to feel like both sites could ultimately provide suburban Minneapolis-St. Paul with more housing, and at this point it’s really only a matter of when.
