Discovering the City from Above at the Foshay Tower

Foshay-TowerIf tall buildings do not bother you and heights do not freak you out, you need to check out the Foshay Tower. The Foshay Tower is now home to the W Hotel. This is a great spot to get a view of the whole city of Minneapolis.

Here is everything you need to know about discovering the city from this tower and the tower itself.

History Of The Foshay Tower

The Foshay Tower was named after Wilbur Foshay. Wilbur Foshay was the original builder. He was also the original owner. The tower was designed with the intention of being a tribute to George Washington. The Foshay Tower was the first tower built 100% with union labor. For forty years, this building was the tallest building in the area. The construction on this building began in 1927.

It was finished in 1929. Wilbur Foshay and Gottlieb R. Magney developed the shape and method of construction of the building. The Patent Office of the United States granted them a patent for both of these things. In 1977, the tower was placed on the National Register of Historical Places.

Dimensions of The Foshay Tower

The Foshay Tower is 32 stories tall. Featuring Indiana Bedford Limestone, it was rumored to be able to withstand winds that reach speeds of as much as 400 per hour.

The Foshay Tower Today

Today, the Foshay Tower is home to the W Hotel. The hotel features more than 220 different rooms. The hotel still has an observation deck on the 30th floor. Visitors can go up on the observation deck (weather allowing) and see approximately 30 miles.

You can live in Minneapolis all of your life, but you’ve never truly seen the city until you’ve made your way to the top of this tower and learned about its very rich history.
