Give Mom a Girls’ Night (or Day) out in the Twin Cities

Mother’s Day is coming up – second Sunday in May every year and Mother’s Day 2015 is on May 10th. Soon we’ll be seeing all the ads and commercials reminding us that it’s “around the corner” and urging us to run out and buy a hokey card, some flowers and, of course, candy.

Will your wife get the same thing this year as last year – and maybe even the year before? You know she won’t complain — you’ll most likely get that wonderful smile and a hug and be sent on your merry way. After all, you’re a guy – you can’t be expected to actually get creative when it comes to choosing gifts, right?

Consider this: between work, errands, kids and chores at home, how much time does she have to spend with friends? Is it a quick cup of coffee once a week while the kids are at soccer practice or maybe an annual dinner out with your favorite couple?

You can be the hero this Mother’s Day and give her the gift of time – and a way to fill it – with her friends — a girls’ day or night out.

Now, a girls’ night out doesn’t necessarily have to conjure images of “Girls gone Wild.” There are lots of ways to spend a fun evening (or day) in the Twin Cities that don’t include downright debauchery. Here’s a couple that you may want to consider:

Cooking Class

Cooking can be a passion for some and if it is for the Mom in your life the gift of a cooking class may just be the ticket to an amazing Mother’s Day Gift, especially if you buy a gift certificate for two, so her bestie can tag along. Classes are available at a couple of cooking schools in the Twin Cities.

  • Saga Hill Cooking School: North Loop, Minneapolis. Their website listing of classes is out of date, so call for current offerings. (612) 281-1846.
  • D’Lish: The spring and summer class lists are long and diverse. [edit: now closed]
  • Cooks of Crocus Hill: Located in Edina, but they hold classes in St. Paul and Stillwater too. You’ll find the class schedule on their website.
  • Kitchen in the Market: Some classes include hands-on training with popular local chefs. Here’s the schedule.

Whether the Mom in your life works outside the home or in, life can be stressful. Give her the gift of a body, mind and spirit rejuvenation with a spa escape. If that time is spent getting a mani/pedi, facial or massage with a friend, all the better.

The Twin Cities region is full of day spas tucked away in every corner of every suburb, so don’t restrict your choices to our list – this is merely a starting point.

  • Ivy Spa Club — Located in downtown Minneapolis, in the Ivy Tower. Their website offers a No Fail Guys’ Gift Guide for men looking for “the perfect gift.” [edit: now closed]
  • The Day Spa Edina – Purchase a gift card online.
  • Massage Envy: This nationwide chain offers numerous Twin Cities locations, including Apple Valley, Blaine, Bloomington, Burnsville, Coon Rapids, Duluth, Eagan, Eden Prairie and more. Find the rest of the locations here or purchase a gift card here.
  • Refinery: Located in Minneapolis’ Dinkytown, this is the place to go for waxing, hair styling, facials, manicures/pedicures and spray tanning. Making an online appointment is a bit of a hassle (they ask you to create an account to even purchase a gift certificate) so call them for details. (612) 331-9055.

Cocktails + Fun

Instead of sitting at a bar with girlfriends (and all the odd situations that may entail), offer Mom the gift of a fun night out that includes cocktails but excludes getting hit on all night.

  • Art & Elixer:  Great gift for the woman with a creative flair. Art & Elixer brings art classes to local Twin Cities restaurants and wineries. From Blaine to Duluth, you’ll find a class close to home. Check out their calendar here.
  • Cocktails and Karaoke: Every Tuesday night, Mancini’s on W. Seventh in St. Paul hosts Karaoke night. The fun starts at 7:30 p.m.
