Neighborhood Spotlight: University
The University of Minnesota defines an area considered as the neighborhood of University. It’s known as one of the country’s largest universities for public research. The campus covers more than 2,000 acres and over 51,000 students attend the Minneapolis campus every year.
Found east of the downtown area, the University neighborhood is home to six smaller communities including:
- Marcy Holmes
- Prospect Park
- University
- Cedar-Riverside (West Bank)
- Como
- Nicollet Island/East Bank
Since the Mississippi River actually divides the larger University community into two sections, this neighborhood is the only one in the city officially occupying both sides of the river.
Real Estate
The homes found in the University neighborhoods cover many different architectural styles. They also have a large price range. The more affordable homes, apartments and condominiums are found in the Cedar-Riverside, Dinkytown and Marcy Holmes areas, while the more exceptional properties are found in the West Bank area.
The Nicollet Island/East Bank area is home to many of the historic homes from the late 19th century. This area is known as the historical center of Minneapolis.
Most of the homes found in the Como area are turn-of-the-century bungalows and a few Victorian homes are also found in this area. Some of the homes here are newer and many larger homes have been converted to apartments for student housing.
The average home value in the University neighborhood is nearly $205,000, which is higher than both the city and the national averages.
