Selling your House Next Spring? Here’s your Fall & Winter To-Do List

Why wait until just before you home goes on the market to prepare it? There are plenty of things you can do right now that will cut down on the time and effort you’ll need to expend in the spring. Although we’ve got rainy weather today and probably tomorrow, the weather guys are forecasting sunshine on Sunday so you’ll have no excuse not to get some pre-sale home chores done.

Have the Home Inspected

One of the most common reasons a home sale falls apart or is delayed is because of problems that the buyer learns about after the home inspection. If you have the home inspected now you will not only avoid nasty surprises in the middle of the transaction when it sells, but you’ll have all winter to get any DIY projects out of the way. Chip away at these projects and by spring the home should be in good condition.

Get a Head Start on Curb Appeal

If you want spring color you probably should’ve planted your bulbs in September but you can actually get them in the soil up until the time the ground freezes, according to Karen Valerio of Hennepin County Master Gardeners. Some may not have enough time to establish a good root system so don’t be disappointed if they all don’t make it through the winter.

Save aerating the lawn until spring, it’s too late in the season for that chore.

Is that a Garage or an Oversized Junk Drawer?

You know those weekends when it’s just too cold and miserable to leave the house? The best way to fill those, if you hope to sell your home in the spring, is by clearing out the clutter in the garage. And you don’t need to knock it out in one weekend; there are 17 weekends between now and the first day of spring so you have plenty of time to get it done.

After you clear out all the clutter and donate or sell items you no longer need or use, it’s time to organize what’s left. Homebuyers love organized spaces – it helps them envision their stuff in the space.

Between the landscaping, the garage and the DIY projects that the home inspection reveals you’ll have lots to do this winter in Minnesota and you’re home will be that much closer to being the star of the spring real estate market.
