Trends in Modern Home Design

Homes of the Future The house of the future may look very different from a traditional single-family home in Edina. But what exactly will change? Functionality may be the top priority, but that doesn’t mean you will have to sacrifice aesthetics.

Here are three trends that you can’t ignore if you want to be thoroughly modern:

Green Design

Architectural standards and building codes are likely to become even more stringent in terms of energy and environmental awareness. Green design extends to the “health” of buildings in addition to their efficiency. The future will usher in new standards for lighting, air quality, integration with the building site, use of natural resources and the whole realm of alternative materials and building practices.

A return to locally sourced, natural materials in addition to affordable, innovative synthetics that are eco-friendly is a welcome change. Reclaimed and recycled products will continue to soar in popularity, offering a sense of history and permanence.

Modern technology will continue to make the modern home safer, healthier, more connected and more comfortable.

Lifelong Wellness

People across all walks of life are serious about health, nutrition and fitness. Those concerns can be reflected in their homes.

While the home of the future may be shrinking in some cases, it is becoming more accessible. The family of the future might be multi-generational: Aging-in-place and universal design principles focus on the needs of residents who might have vision and mobility problems, hearing difficulties, cognitive deficiencies and varied interests.

Modern houses feature open floor plans and adaptable spaces that can easily be reconfigured to meet the needs of residents of various ages and abilities. Work-at-home options, exercise rooms, better integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, and security concerns are at the forefront of future design in luxury Minnesota real estate.

Not only individual homes, but entire communities may change to reflect these newer sensibilities.

Sustainability and Building Resilience

Natural disasters and depletion of resources, water purity, infrastructure and other environmental concerns prompt a changing paradigm. The need for resilient buildings and more sustainable homes is certainly growing. It is almost certain that higher construction standards will be introduced, and desired by home buyers over time.

With all of this in mind, being ahead of the curve in one or all of these aspects can make your home stand out among many. You may find you enjoy living in your home just a bit more as an added bonus.
