American Swedish Institute is a museum in Minneapolis where people come together to experience the culture and arts of Sweden. This museum and cultural center has become a Minnesota landmark and a must-do experience for locals.

The vibrant museum offers quite an experience by offering a piece of Swedish historic combined with contemporary culture. You can tour exhibits through the historic mansion, relax in the courtyard or pick up a unique item in the museum’s gift shop. Here is a look at what you’ll enjoy at the American Swedish Institute.

Visiting Info

The museum is open 10am-5pm on Saturdays, noon – 5pm on Sundays and is closed on Mondays. Weekdays the museum opens at noon and closes at 5pm with extended hours on Wednesdays until 8pm.

For ASI members, the museum admission is free. Adults can visit for $9 per day while seniors, children and students will receive a discount.


You can tour the museum with public tours or as a private group. Public tours are free with admission on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 1:30pm while private tours must be booked in advance. You can always take a self-guided tour through the historic Turnblad Mansion at your own pace since volunteer interpreters are stationed throughout the museum.

Check out the Nelson Cultural Center which includes a welcoming layout, Swedish-inspired detailing and environmentally sustainable solutions. You’ll be able to find the ASI award-winning café FIKA, the modern Osher Gallery for traveling and local exhibits, a classroom and the museum shop.


You can see so much culture and education at the ASI. Current exhibits include “Nordic Inspired, American Made” until April 26th, “Future Laureates Lab” until May 24th and “Nobel Creations: Inspired by the Nobel Prize” until May 24th. All the themes discussed include culture, migration, the environment and the arts.
