Have you heard of beer gardens? Back centuries ago, Bavarian brewers would store their beer in cellars under chestnut trees near the River Isar. After they covered the ground with gravel and served clients that had sat under the tree with their personal picnics, the gardens become a big hit.

You’ll see them throughout Germany today like the popular Hirschgarten restaurant in Munich which can seat 8,000 people at the garden. Minnesota has caught on to the trend and here is a look at the top beer gardens that you have to check out around the state.

Indeed Brewing Company – 711 NE 15th Avenue, Minneapolis

The Indeed Brewing Company is Minneapolis’ beer garden located on the entire first floor of the Solar Arts Building. It’s a great vibe and a loft atmosphere with an outdoor patio just a short walk from the brewery. Sit under the hanging lights on one of the long benches or gather by the fire on a cold night. Sometimes they bring in food trucks and the favorite Mexican Honey Beer, a 2014 medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival.

Butcher & The Boar – 1121 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis

Butcher and the Boar is a huge space found in Minneapolis with a fantastic beer garden. Check out the 5,000 square foot space where you can see a full view of the kitchen, a great beer menu and nice background music. Since they have a huge tent and wood-burning fireplace, the weather doesn’t keep anyone away. Bring your pets too since the beer garden is pet friendly.

August Schell Brewing Company – 1860 Schell’s Road, New Ulm

One of the most authentic beer gardens in America is the August Schell Brewing Company in New Ulm. It’s a family-owned brewery with a garden leading up to the old family house, views of the creek and woods and a beautiful brick patio. Check it out on Sundays when the weather permits and enjoy good-time music, beer, root beer and baskets of bread with cheese. They’ll give you a tour during the summer and there is even a museum on site.

Check out these beer gardens in Minnesota to experience a piece of Germany right from your own state.
